چکیده
CONTEXT To determine the effect of Livingstone potato (Plectranthus esculentus N.E.Br) on hepatic G6PD in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. METHODS The G6PD activities in the liver homogenates of the rats and chemical analysis of the test feeds were determined using standard techniques. RESULTS The diabetic control rats had significant elevation (P < 0.05) of their hepatic G6PD activities compared with the non-diabetic rats. Intake of the test feed by the diabetic rats of group 3, resulted in significant (P<0.05) amelioration of their hepatic G6PD activities in comparison with the diabetic control rats. Chemical analysis of the test feed revealed that it contained considerable amounts of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, antioxidants and their cyanide contents were below the toxic level for humans. CONCLUSION The study shows ameliorative potentials of Livingstone potato on the hepatic G6PD activity of diabetic rats which is attributed to its antioxidant/polyphenolic constituents.

BACKGROUND The effect of livingstone potato (Plectranthus esculenthus N.E.Br) on diabetes and its complications in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats was investigated. The duration of the experiment was 4 weeks. METHODS The blood glucose level of the rats was measured with a glucometer, the protein and glucose and specific gravity in the urine samples of the rats were measured using urine a...
متن کاملEffect of exogenous leptin on serum levels of lipids, glucose, renal and hepatic variables in both genders of obese and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
Objective(s): Leptin exerts various effects on appetite and body weight. Disruption of the obesitygene is precedent to fatness. Insulin or glucose elevates leptin, but streptozotocin reduces it. However, controversial data exist for the effects of leptin on diabetes and leptin level in each gender. Leptin can damage the kidney function but little evidence exists for its hepatic effects. The aim...

Objective. Succnic acid mono ethyl ester (EMS) was recently proposed as an insulinotropic agent for the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. In the present study the effect of EMS and Metformin on the activities of carbohydrate metabolic enzymes in streptozotocinnicotinamide induced type 2 diabeteic model was investigated. Methods. EMS were injected intraperitonially at doses 2...

The study was designed to investigate the anti-hyperglycemic activity of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Fifty-five mg/kg of streptozotocin was injected in rats to induce diabetes. Animals either treated with SeNPs alone or with insulin (6 U/kg) showed significantly decreased fasting blood glucose levels after 28 days of treatment. The serum insulin conce...
